A senior BYD regional executive has publicly reaffirmed the Chinese electric vehicle maker's partnership with Cimex Inc, the official distributor of BYD vehicles in Nepal, after Chaudhary Group Chairman Binod Chaudhary and Managing Director Nirvana Chaudhary met BYD founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Wang Chuanfu in China, a meeting that has drawn attention in Nepal's automobile market.

Ketsu Zhang, a senior BYD executive overseeing the Asia Pacific region, said in a social media post that BYD would remain with Cimex in Nepal. He expressed strong confidence in the relationship built between the two companies over the past 10 years and reiterated BYD's commitment to its partners and customers in Nepal.

“BYD will be with Cimex BYD and strongly believe in cooperation which has been established in the past 10 years with each other,” Zhang wrote. He also said BYD and Cimex would work together to introduce more products and technologies in Nepal and serve the local market and community.

Zhang's statement came shortly after photographs emerged of Binod and Nirvana Chaudhary meeting Wang at BYD's global headquarters in Shenzhen, China.

Nirvana Chaudhary shared photographs of the meeting on social media, saying he had spent time with Wang and exchanged views with the founder of BYD. He described the interaction with the leader behind one of the world's major technology and mobility companies as inspiring.

One of the photographs shows Binod and Nirvana Chaudhary with Wang at BYD headquarters, while another shows Nirvana with the BYD chairman.

The meeting has attracted particular attention in Nepal because Chaudhary Group already has business ties with BYD in several overseas markets. The group distributes BYD vehicles in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Slovenia and is pursuing further expansion, including into the United Kingdom.

In Nepal, however, Cimex is BYD's authorised distributor. Cimex has been selling and distributing BYD vehicles in the country for about a decade, while BYD has emerged as one of the leading brands as Nepal's electric vehicle market has expanded rapidly in recent years.

The Chaudharys' meeting with BYD's top leadership prompted speculation over whether cooperation between BYD and Chaudhary Group could also expand into Nepal. Against that backdrop, Zhang's decision to explicitly name Cimex and reaffirm the relationship has been seen as a clear message that BYD's existing distribution partnership in Nepal remains intact.

The wording of Zhang's statement is particularly notable. Rather than speaking only about BYD's plans for Nepal, he referred specifically to the company's 10 year relationship with Cimex, reiterated its commitment to its partner and said the two companies would continue working together to bring more products and technologies to Nepal.

There is, however, no public evidence that BYD's Nepal distribution business was discussed during the Chaudharys' meeting with Wang. Nor has there been any confirmation that Chaudhary Group has sought BYD's distribution rights in Nepal or that BYD has considered reviewing its arrangement with Cimex.

It would therefore be premature to establish a direct link between the Chaudharys' meeting and Zhang's subsequent statement. Still, given Chaudhary Group's expanding relationship with BYD across international markets, the senior BYD executive's Cimex focused message appears to address possible uncertainty surrounding the company's Nepal partnership.

At least for now, Zhang's public statement sends a clear signal that BYD continues to back its existing partner, Cimex, in Nepal.
