The government has decided to provide temporary cash assistance for housing and resettlement to squatters displaced by the eviction drive in Kathmandu nearly a month ago.

A Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, May 19, approved the verification of affected households and a one-time resettlement grant of Rs 25,000 per family, government spokesperson and Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel said.

“To encourage families displaced from riverbank settlements to arrange their alternative settlement on their own, households with up to five members will be provided Rs 15,000 per month for housing management expenses as part of an interim relief measure for three months,” added Pokharel. “Families with more than five members will be provided an additional Rs 2,000 per extra member.”

The government also said elderly people, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable individuals unable to arrange housing independently would be accommodated in designated holding centres.

Authorities have further been directed to ensure continuity of children’s education and coordinate healthcare services with local governments.
