NEPSE Extends Losing Streak, Closes Lower for Fifth Time in Six Trading Days

The downturn in the share market continued on Tuesday, May 19, with the benchmark Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index closing lower for the fifth time in the past six trading sessions.

The NEPSE index fell 0.23 percent, or 6.51 points, to close at 2,724.39.

The market had slipped 0.03 percent on Monday, the first trading day of the week. Last Friday, May 15, the index posted a marginal gain of 0.06 percent after consecutive declines of 0.36 percent on Thursday, 0.15 percent on Wednesday and 1.41 percent on Tuesday.

Market breadth remained weak, with 145 stocks declining, 113 advancing and 12 remaining unchanged.

Daily turnover increased to Rs 3.08 billion from Rs 2.45 billion in the previous session. A total of 7.81 million shares changed hands through 45,519 transactions.

All major sub-indices ended in the red. The Sensitive Index slipped 0.14 percent, while the Float Index and Sensitive Float Index declined 0.13 percent and 0.12 percent, respectively.

Corporate Development Bank Limited emerged as the day’s top gainer, surging 14.26 percent. City Hotel Limited was the biggest loser, dropping 6.84 percent.

By turnover, City Hotel Limited led the market with transactions worth Rs 235.33 million, followed by Sahas Urja Limited and Ankhu Khola Jalvidhyut Company Ltd.

Only four of the 13 sectoral indices ended in the green, led by the Development Bank Index, up 0.77 percent.

The Trading Index dipped the most, down 1.24 percent.

Total market capitalisation declined to Rs 4,646.59 billion from Rs 4,657.70 billion at the close of the previous trading session.
