Santosh Narayan Shrestha, chairman of the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON), has resigned from his post, submitting his resignation to the Ministry of Finance on Friday night.

According to sources at the ministry, Shrestha reached the ministry at around 9:00 PM and handed over his resignation letter, stating that he stepped down voluntarily to support the new government.

Earlier in the evening, Shrestha had convened a meeting of SEBON’s Executive Committee, where he informed members of his decision to resign, citing personal reasons. A senior SEBON official confirmed that he thanked colleagues during the meeting before taking leave.

Shrestha was appointed as SEBON chairman on November 25, 2024, by the then government led by KP Sharma Oli for a four-year term. The position had remained vacant for nearly a year prior to his appointment.

Shrestha’s appointment had drawn public attention amid allegations of influence from a business group. His resignation comes amid reports that the current government, led by Balen Shah, has asked politically appointed officials to step down.

Shrestha holds BBA and MBA degrees from Kathmandu University. He previously served as a director at the Nepal Electricity Authority and held leadership roles in various financial institutions.
