Gokarna Awasthi has been appointed editor-in-chief of Kantipur Daily, one of Nepal's largest Nepali-language newspapers.
Awasthi brings over two decades of experience across journalism, economic and political analysis, teaching, and the private sector, the media group announced. He will formally assume the role on May 5, 2026.
This marks his second stint with Kantipur. He previously served as the newspaper’s economic news editor, where he helped refine economic journalism and foster public debate on economic issues.
His most recent position was as director general of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), where he promoted entrepreneurship and the private sector. Prior to that, he served as a sustainable development goals advisor at the United Nations office in Nepal, focusing on SDG mainstreaming and localization.
Awasthi has also chaired the Society of Economic Journalists Nepal (SEJON) and served on the board of the Securities Board of Nepal. He has teaching experience in Nepal's business environment and international business.
His appointment follows the resignation of Umesh Chauhan, who had been editor-in-chief since May 2023. After Chauhan's departure, Kantipur said it received 17 applications for the position. Awasthi was selected from a shortlist of three candidates.
Awasthi holds a postgraduate degree in management from Tribhuvan University and a diploma in development journalism from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in New Delhi. He is currently pursuing a PhD at Kathmandu University focusing on political economy.
