The government plans to restore road connectivity in areas hit by the August 26 floods by mid-October, as it accelerates reconstruction of damaged roads and bridges.

Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal said on Monday, September 14, that the ministry had formed eight thematic task forces to speed up reconstruction of transport infrastructure damaged by the floods.

Speaking at a meeting with elected representatives from flood-affected areas at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Lamsal said the government has prioritised alternative road routes and the installation of suspension bridges and other temporary crossings to restore connectivity.

He also said work would also be expedited to rebuild permanent roads and bridges in the affected areas.

Lamsal urged local representatives to coordinate with the ministry and its agencies to identify damaged infrastructure, prepare reconstruction plans and monitor implementation. He also called for coordination among federal, provincial and local governments to prevent duplication of reconstruction work.

The government has targeted restoring drinking-water systems in the affected areas by mid-December, Lamsal said.

He added that work was under way to rebuild health, education and other essential infrastructure damaged by the floods.
